چکیده

[1] The phase of precipitation is important for weather forecasts, land hydrology and remote sensing. To quantify the temperature and pressure dependence of snow frequency (F, in %) when precipitation occurs, we have analyzed 3-hourly weather reports of surface air temperature (Ts, C) and pressure (Ps), and snow and rain occurrences from over 15,000 land stations and available ship observations from 1977–2007. It is found that the phase transition occurs over a fairly wide range of temperature from about 2 C to +4 C over (low-elevation) land and 3 C to +6 C over ocean. The F-Ts relationship can be represented by a hyperbolic tangent: F(Ts) = a [tanh (b (Ts – c)) – d], with the slope parameter b close to 0.7 over land and 0.4 over ocean. The pressuredependence is only secondary and reflected in the parameters. Results show that snow occurs often (F > 50%) for Ts 1.2 C over land and Ts 1.9 C over ocean, and are non-negligible (F > 5%) for Ts 3.8 C over land and Ts 5.5 C over ocean. This ‘‘warm bias’’ results from the falling of snowflakes into warmer surface layers, which is especially true over ocean. The warm bias is higher when air pressure is below 750 hPa because snow falls faster in thin air. Citation: Dai, A. Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

An evaluation of methods for determining during-storm precipitation phase and the rain/snow transition elevation at the surface in a mountain basin

Determining surface precipitation phase is required to properly correct precipitation gage data for wind effects, to determine the hydrologic response to a precipitation event, and for hydrologic modeling when rain will be treated differently from snow. In this paper we present a comparison of several methods for determining precipitation phase using 12 years of hourly precipitation, weather an...

Snow occurrence changes over the central and eastern United States under future warming scenarios

Changes of snow occurrence across the central and eastern United States under future warming for the late 21(st) century are investigated by applying an empirical hyperbolic tangent function to both observed and downscaled high spatial resolution (~12.5 km) daily temperature and precipitation, to compare the historical (1981-2000) and future (2081-2100) snow occurrence. The observed distributio...

Simulation study of past survival trends in over-wintering of wheat in Iran

The snow-cover on soil, the factor that protects wheat from the biting cold, has generally declined; on the other hand, the surface air temperature has warmed. It is not clear whether these changes decrease winter-killing of wheat or favor it in Iran. Therefore, this study was mainly aimed to determine the past trend in frequency of winter-kill events (Y) for wheat with -4 oC frost tolerance, u...
